Tahini

Tahini paste is made from crushed sesame seeds and has quite a nutty taste.

  • The dark version is made from the whole sesame seed and is highly nutritious.
  • The light version contains hulled sesame seed, and therefore contains less vitamins and minerals.
Tahini is highly nutritious:
  • Contains amino acids, calcium, B vitamins, vitamin E, A, essential fatty acids, iron manganese, phosphorous, potassium, sulphur and zinc.
  • Richer in protein than cow milk, soya beans, sunflower seeds and most nuts (Tahini is 20% complete protein).
  • No saturated fats and no cholesterol. Nevertheless it does have a high calorie content, so to be used in moderation!

Where to use it:
Tahini paste is used in a variety of dishes, such as hummus, baba ghanoush, as a sauce/dip for salads and vegetables and can also be used on its own as a spread, like peanut butter or margarine.

Tahini originates in ancient Persia (Iran) and is widely used in the Arabic speaking countries of the Mediterranean.

Notes:
  • Tahini is sold in 250g jars, at any health food store and asian shops.
  • The hulling process is either chemical or "mechanical". All brands available at health food stores were processed mechanically.
  • For health reasons, we would advise you to stay away from the chemically hulled tahini.
