Conventional productsConventional toothpastes and mouthwashes are heavily involved in animal exploitation, as the companies behind these brands will commission animal experiments so new ingredients can be put in the market. This despite the fact that there are already safe ingredients on the market. The chemical cocktail of ingredients found in conventional dental care products are also known to have detrimental and damaging effects on the environment, human and nonhuman animals. For example, alcohol-containing mouthwashes were recently found to increase the risk of oral cancer. For more information, read "Mouthwash linked to cancer " Teeth Whitening! An old-time favorite, baking soda has many purposes, including tooth whitening. Most dentists now agree that it is safe to use (in small amounts) and is very efficient. You can use it alone on a damp toothbrush or mix it with toothpaste to help neutralize the salty taste. Go gently at the gumline as baking soda is abrasive. Only do this once or twice a week when your teeth are losing their whiteness. Tom of Maine.Tom's of Maine was founded in 1970 in the US. Tom's of Maine was bought by Colgate-Palmolive in 2006. Although they do have a fixed cut off date, their parent company commissions animal experiments. We do not recommend buying from them as any profits made by a subsidiary could be used to fund the activities of that parent company. Some vegans will use this brand, others won't. It's up to you to decide what is best. For more information, read "Tom’s of Maine, or Tom’s of Greed!?" Non-Vegan productsThree corporations dominate the dental care market :
