Hidden animal ingredients


Some common ingredients found in cosmetics that are not vegan include:
  • Allantoin = A uric acid from cows, most mammals. Also in many plants (especially comfrey).

  • Amylase = An enzyme prepared from the pancreas of hogs.

  • Arachidonic Acid = A liquid unsaturated fatty acid occurring in the liver, brain, glands, and fat of animals.

  • Beeswax = bee derived products (also pollen/propolis/cera alba/honey).

  • Carmine = Red coloring made from crushed beetles. Mostly used in lipsticks (also referred as Crimson Lake, Natural Red 4, CI75470, cochineal.). Carmine, also referred to as cochineal or carminic acid, is a red pigment obtained by crushing tens of thousands of female cochineal insects. This colouring is used in cosmetics, shampoos and food dyes.
    Reportedly 70,000 beetles may be killed to produce one pound of this red dye.

  • Caroten = Provitamin A. Found in many animal tissues and in all plants (also known as Beta Carotene).

  • castereum = From muskrat and beaver genitals.

  • Cholesterin = Cholesterol.A steroid alcohol, especially in all animal fats and oils, nerve tissue, egg yolk and blood. Can be derived from lanolin.

  • Civet = Obtained from the civet, a small mammal, by stimulating them, usually through torture.

  • Collagen = Fibrous protein usually derived from animal tissue.

  • Cysteine = Two amino acids which can come from animals (also known as L-Form, Cystine).

  • Elastin = Fibrous protein usually derived from animal ligaments.

  • Fish oil = Derived from fishes (also /Fish scales/Fish liver oil/Fletan oil/Guanine/Insinglass/Marine oil).

  • Gelatin = Protein obtained by boiling skin, tendons, ligaments or bones with water, From cattle and hogs.

  • Keratin = Found in animal horns, hooves, feathers, quills and hair.

  • Lactose = milk products (also lactalbumin, whey, casein, caseinogen, Lactic Acid).

  • Lanolin = wool fat (also lanolin alcohol, lanolin oil, Laneth-5-10, Lanogene. Lanosterol, Isopropyl Lanolate).
